Saint Geoffrey

Geoffrey Stone, a law professor at the University of Chicago, is a favorite political commentator. His op-eds appear regularly in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune and the like. You can find several of his past ones in the news section of the Law School’s website. Troll through the archives on the left side; it’s tedious, but it’s worth it.

He writes intelligently about our government and, when you’re through reading, you’ll have a better understanding of how it’s supposed to work, how things have gone terribly wrong, and how we should fix it.

He doesn’t hold back either. For example, he writes about why William Rehnquist’s death was good for America, why George W. Bush’s birth was bad for America, and why John McCain doesn’t understand the Constitution. He also gives a well-reasoned and brave defense of gay marriage. (The one about Bush has one of my favorite endings ever. “Bush is a man of faith, not a man of law. That is a problem,” he says. I just love that.)

For those who like video, there is this recent talk entitled “The World of the Framers: A Christian Nation?”

His latest op-ed advocates for the creation of a “Civil Liberties Adviser” in the President’s cabinet. Just read it. I was going to summarize it, but you should really just read it. I would do his writing a disservice if I tried to paraphrase it.

Professor Stone, you’re my choice for Vice President. More importantly, you’re my choice for Civil Liberties Adviser.

  1. Thanks for the links! I like having access to judicial information put into layman’s terms. I think Geoffrey Stone supplies that.

And as if i needed more proof that McCain is a jackass…
